Issue

Although a solid waste service provider does serve Btekhnay, the risk of open dumping looms ominously as fuel shortages and public-private disputes causes unreliability in the trash pickup schedule. The community does not sort its waste, and nearby landfill and street bins are reaching maximum capacity. Open dumping in this area could contaminate the area’s entire ecosystem and damage the valley’s legendary snobar pine trees.

Current Activities

Formulating creative activities to engage households in reducing, reusing, and upcycling activities, assessing the viability of a centralized versus household-level composting plan, understanding the community’s context and household-level drivers to facilitate sorting at the source, determining best potential collection points for the sorted waste, and exploring potential partnerships with local recycling facilities.
